De muurschildering Sint-Christoffel in de Grote Kerk, Breda: Het materiaal-technisch onderzoek in situ.
Met zicht op de Christoffel schildering (ca 1535) in de Grote Kerk Breda presenteerde K. Keutgens ‘The St. Christopher wall painting in the Grote Kerk, Breda: The on site material technical study.’
Abstract door Karin Keutgens
Condition report – The Christoffel Painting was very seriously affected and contaminated by previous radical interventions. The plaster layer showed numerous anomalies and dsturbances with very different and diverse character due to fills and mortar repairs. The actual pictorial layer was heavily soiled and discolored. The image was also largely determined by the many additions and overpainting.
Archival and technical research — Prior to the conservation-restoration, extensive research was done, archival sources consulted and the restoration history examined. Samples were also screened for the identification of the binder, the layer structure and the nature of the superimposed layers. In situ survey — The in situ study aimed to understand the material technical structure and insight into the impact of the various 20th century restoration interventions on the uniqueness of the painting and to evaluate the state of preservation. There was a detailed damage image that served as a basis for the further conservation and restoration. |
